Nice To Meet You!
My name is Merit and I'm a paper crafting junkie. I was born and raised on the East Coast, the youngest of 3 kids. In 2005 I made the only impulsive decision I've ever made, and moved out to sunny southern CA. I'd always found the beach to be inspiring and the fact that I could escape the cold weather made it that much better!
I worked in the custom framing industry for a decade. This basically means I got to be surrounded by beautiful (and let's be honest, some not so good) artwork. I had the opportunity to preserve people's memories from vacations all over the world. I thrived in the environment but when the economy tanked, my job went with it.
After spending so many years preserving people's memories, I needed to create an environment I could thrive in. Over the next 10 years I began making and selling greeting cards, gift tags and more. With the birth of my daughter in 2014, I left the workforce to become a Stay At Home Mom. While I love the ability to be with Kennedy, I also crave the connection with other adult humans!
My Stampin' Story
I found Stampin' Up!® on Pinterest; it was actually the Moon Baby stamps which caught my eye. I started looking at the SU! website and found they had a lot of stamps I loved, and I wanted to order. I loaded up my shopping cart with goodies and as I went to check out, it asked me to choose a demonstrator.
Side note: Now, though I'd been crafting for a long time, I shopped primarily at Michael's and Hobby Lobby and used my Cricut for most projects. I didn't do a lot of stamping, as I sold my cards and many companies frowned on that.
I was all, "What's this demonstrator business all about?" And began to research it. When I first found out that SU! was a direct sales company, I was a bit gun shy. Direct sales companies tend to be a bit shady and cost the "seller" a lot of capital with little hope for a return on their investment.
But you know what? SU! is the real deal. Aside from your welcome kit, you never have to order anything. And if you don't meet your minimums, you simply are no longer a demo. And furthermore, there was no catch!
From Hobby to Business Demo
I joined on as a Hobby Demo (for more on the different kinds of demonstrators, click here), looking to take advantage of the discount. When my welcome kit showed up, it was the first time I actually saw a catalog. Guys, I was in love. EVERYTHING MATCHED!!!
I mean, we're all crafters here. How many times did you leave a craft store with one (or five, no judgement here) new patterned paper only to get home and discover non of your more than 50 shades of blue matched your new paper? So you then go back to the store for that blue cardstock, find more pretty paper and the cycle continues.
That, for me, was always the hardest part of crafting. SU! made it so easy with their product suites that I had to share it. And it was in this sharing that I realized I'd found my dream job!
Fun N' Crafty Team
For me, one of the best parts of joining Stampin' Up!® was becoming part of a community of crafters. While I have some crafty friends, most are still on the East Coast, and the ones near me are more quilters or knitters. It's been amazing to find all these like-minded people!
I had the opportunity to go to OnStage (Stampin' Up!® convention) in Salt Lake City in 2017. There were 2,700 demonstrators there. Some were 20+ year veterans, while others were just getting started. There were hobby demos, teaching demos and business demos. It was completely invigorating!
The team I joined under, The Fun N' Crafty Team, had 11 of us there. If you've ever wanted the feeling of finding your tribe, I can say that joining SU! allowed me to experience just that!
